High school is a big transition for your child. They are no longer going to be the big kids on the block. It’s also a time of great discovery. It will build their character and shape who they are in the future. You, as a parent, have a responsibility to make them ready for the next big step.

Your first course of action should be to engage your child in a dialog about what they believe high school is going to be like. You might be surprised to find that they have some fears, or that they are aware of some of the challenges. You know there will be things that your child might be afraid to ask but your job should be to engage them in conversation about the things that they do want to talk about.

Another thing to consider is giving them some stories of how your days in high school were. You can give them an insight into some of the things that you faced so they are aware that they may go through it too and if they do they are not alone.

On the academic side you might want to try getting on Canada 411 and looking for a list of online resources that your child can consult if they have trouble in their courses. If they are going to get help online, you want to make sure they are going to the right places.

Too many people grow up thinking that life will be a bowl of cherries as long as they strike out on the best possible career path. In reality, a person’s lifestyle can be whatever they want it to be if they plan accordingly and follow financial tips.

One part of learning to budget is being able to separate needs from wants and then prioritize them. When someone spends money without thinking, it can be disastrous in both the short term and the long term.

One way to begin the process of teaching money management to a child is to provide an allowance and then encourage saving it over a period of time to get something that they want. Even elementary-age children can understand money. As they get older, discuss how to use credit wisely and teach them how to use banking accounts properly.

One of the worst things about coming out of generational poverty and making it into the middle class is dealing with the expectations of your parents. Notwithstanding how they often implicitly expect you to take care of them during their twilight years, your parents’ expectations about your spending patterns can become downright punishing. After their years of struggle and sacrifice for everything they own, it can be somewhat embrassing to tell them what you might be spending on certain items.

In many poor cultures, conscious spending is not practiced because there is simply not any disposable income to spend consciously. For a lot of the poorest individuals, scraping together enough money to send their children to any kind of school is considered one part blessing and another part sacrifice. So how could you possibly explain spending into the high six figures on your home? While your parents may be infinitely forgiving of such things, some other parents consider the most successful members of the family to be ultimately responsible for supporting its less successful constituents.

This can cause a cultural clash, as you spend what you earn on what you really want while your “obligations” to the family go unmet. There is no easy answer to the dilemma of spending for what you want (since you made the money) or giving it back to the people who didn’t earn a penny of it. In cases where providing for family causes you genuine financial hardship, the best answer is to keep your money for your own needs. However, many people find themselves being happiest when they give freely to people in need.

Relationship Categories

Relationships are complicated. As complicated as they feel at times there are really only about 5 categories of human relationships. The categories are family, friendship, work, and love.

Family relationships are the foundation for your social interaction with others. It is where the best of our self comes out and the worse of our self. We learn to deal with those older than us. We deal with siblings who know how to make us happy and what button to push to make us get out of control. Then there are the inevitable relatives that come in and out of our lives. It is here we learn to love, hate, negotiate, and manipulate.

Along the way we acquire friend relationships. These emotions teach us to love outside of our family group. The bond shared revolves around either common interests or shared rebellion. Emotions are similar to our feelings in the family group, but at a different level and depth. A friend is outside of our family group so there will be a difference in the structure of their life. We learn to negotiate our life structure with their life structure.

Work relationships happen through our volunteer and organizational activities or our first job. These take us to a different arena. They are not about loving or liking, but about having the ability to cooperate, form teams, and deal with people not of our choosing. It is here we learn the skills of tolerance.

Then there is intimate love of another. Love is different for everyone. These emotions are intense and oscillate from positive to negative in any given moment.
